Charlottesville, Virginia saw some really strange sights such as fascists and communists going to war again. Strange times we live in indeed. This is episode 48 of The LAVA Spurt. Fascists and Communists.  This episode is brought to you by Tom Woods's Liberty Classroom, helping you to become a smarter and more informed libertarian than ever before, for just 24 cents a day.

There were a couple of pretty controversial issues last week that I have been asked by several of my awesome listeners to address. I tackled Libertarian Racists earlier this week in episode forty-seven of The LAVA Spurt that you can get to at thelavaflow.com/tls47. This episode we're going to talk about communists vs. fascists and the Charlottesville, Virginia idiocy.

We haven't seen such a battle between communists vs. fascists since World War II over seventy years ago! Strange how the more things change the more they stay the same.

The initial rally by the alt-right was meant to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The city of Charlottesville voted to remove the statue earlier this year. The lineup of speakers included Richard Spencer, most famous for getting punched in the face, Augustus Invictus, most famous for drinking the blood of a goat, and Christopher Cantwell, most famous for, well, this riot in Charlottesville. The rally was billed as a Unite the Right rally, but there were almost no mainstream right-leaning people there. It was full of the alt right and Nazis and many other forms of racists.

Of course, the racists were met by a large counter-protest comprised of Antifa, communists, and other leftists.

Let's be clear, both sides of this situation were the very fringes of the left and the right, not the mainstream of either group.

Both sides are full of angry, violent people, so there was no question that there would be violence by throwing these two groups together in the same place and time. There has been violence between these groups before, like in February in Berkley, California, but this time there was death left in the wake when racist James Fields drove his car into a group of people and stationary vehicles, killing Heather Heyer, 32. Fields has been charged with second-degree murder.

The motives of both groups are clear, and they are both immoral. One group wants to segregate themselves from people they don't like, by force if necessary. The other group wants to shut down the speech of the racists, by force if necessary. But, as we saw, violence doesn't solve the problem. If anything, this violence has only made the situation worse and much more volatile.

It seems there is no way for these very divergent groups of people to live in peace with each other. As I said on the last LAVA Spurt, of course, it would be a much better world if people would not be racist assholes or namby pamby communistic whiney bitches who are afraid of words, but neither of those is ever going to happen. Since there will always be racists and communists, there has to be another way to allow them to coexist peacefully.

And there is, as far as I can tell, only one way to allow this to happen peacefully, and that is through libertarianism. As I said on the last Spurt, the best possible solution would be for these groups to embrace non-initiation of force and understand that there is plenty of room in this world for people of all persuasions, even communists and fascists, so long as no one is forcing anyone to do anything against their will.

The issue here is private property and the problem in Charlottesville was one of the tragedy of the commons. Since this was on public land and the statue is publicly owned, both groups have a valid claim to it. The destruction of public spaces and public property would instantly resolve issues like this in the future. The town of Charlottesville has said it will cost over $700,000 to remove this Robert E. Lee statue and another statue of Stonewall Jackson. I say the town should auction off these two statues, with the caveat that any costs to move the statues to the winner's property would be born by the winner. Not only would this save taxpayers nearly three-quarters of a million dollars, it would also end this situation immediately. Someone who wants these for their own memorial or for a museum would certainly purchase these, easily enough, and the taxpayers would come out ahead.

But, to go even further, we need to completely remove public spaces. Since we can all lay claim to public spaces, there are always going to be disagreements about how those spaces are used. If we have only private property and private spaces in a libertarian society, no one would have the ability to stop anyone from doing whatever the hell they want on their own property, including having some racist jackoff speak.

The problem here is that both sides in this war of the fringe are wrong. It is always wrong to punch a Nazi for speaking. It is also always wrong to punch a communist for trying to out speak a Nazi. This should be simple, but clearly it's not, sadly.

Until next time... keep striking the root.
