The Michigan Health & Hospital Association named Trinity Health Michigan Medical Groups the recipient of its 2026 Advancing Safe Care Award in October. The honor recognized StandSafe, a workplace violence prevention program used in outpatient practices across the state. It is a clear example of what medical office awards reward and why.
What the Advancing Safe Care Award Recognized
The MHA announced the award on October 14 at its Keystone Center Safety & Quality Symposium. StandSafe serves more than 300 ambulatory practices and was developed jointly by Trinity Health’s Southeast Michigan and West Michigan medical groups.
The program is built on five pillars:
- Prevent
- Speak Up
- Support
- Be Prepared
- Stand Together
In practice, StandSafe includes safety committees, standardized staff education, daily safety huddles, de-escalation training, and consistent reporting pathways. Trinity Health also expanded physical security assessments at its practices and is developing an electronic health record flag to identify patients with a history of violence.
According to the MHA, staff safety surveys improved on several measures after the program took hold, including employees’ willingness to ask questions and their confidence that supervisors support a safe workplace. More consistent reporting has also given leaders a clearer view of where risks arise.
Why Workplace Safety Matters in Medical Offices
Front desk staff, nurses, and physicians often absorb tension from patients and families who are frightened or in pain. A program that prepares staff for those moments protects everyone in the building.
A medical office award that recognizes this kind of work rewards systems rather than individual effort. It also signals that a practice treats safety as an ongoing responsibility.
Protecting patients carries equal weight. Practices and facilities that address safety and take steps to prevent sexual assault in care facilities through training and reporting policies tend to earn more trust from families.
What Other Medical Office Awards Measure
Most credible healthcare programs look at a mix of patient safety, patient experience, staff support, and community involvement. A strong application usually documents results over time.
Diagnostic accuracy is part of that picture. When a wrong diagnosis delays treatment, the consequences can follow a patient for years. Clear records matter as well. Notes from an initial physical therapy visit establish a baseline that every later session is measured against. Those same notes can carry weight outside the clinic. Attorneys handling injury claims often rely on physical therapy records to show how a patient’s condition changed during treatment.
Access counts, too. Many people delay care because they aren’t sure when they need it, and practices that help patients decide when to see a doctor about anxiety make it easier to get care early.
Why Awards Matter to Patients
A medical office award gives patients one more signal when choosing a provider. It should not replace a referral from a trusted physician or a review of a practice’s credentials. But it does show that an outside group examined the practice and found something worth noting.
At The Lava Flow Awards, we believe recognition should rest on documented results and a clear review process. If you know a medical practice whose work deserves recognition, we encourage you to submit a nomination.
